Obsidian Flames will always be 'the Charizard set' — the Darkness-type Tera Charizard ex led a set that also quietly printed Pidgeot ex, the most important consistency card of the era. Type-shifted Tera ex were the experiment here, and the experiment worked.

Obsidian Flames — Scarlet & Violet series, released August 11, 2023. Official totals: 230 cards, of which 197 are the main set and 33 are secret rares above the printed line.

  • Ultra Rare: 12
  • Special Illustration Rare: 6
  • Illustration Rare: 12
  • Hyper Rare: 3

Read as a collector, that table is the set's personality: 21 Double Rare ex anchor the playable chase, 12 Ultra Rares carry the full-art treatments, and 21 Illustration-class and Hyper-class cards form the art-first tier that most collectors actually hunt. Read as a player, the same table is a shopping map — the Double Rare line is where the format's tools live.

Composition, for deck builders: the set's Pokémon lean Colorless (29), Grass (26), Psychic (25) by card count, backed by 19 Trainer cards in the data. Type density is destiny for a set's decks — it predicts which archetypes the set can feed on its own and which must import help from neighboring sets.
