The Scarlet & Violet era changed what collectors chase. Before it, the top of a set was a Rainbow Rare — mechanically the same card in a busier frame. The era's signature rarity, the Illustration Rare, is something else: a full-bleed art piece that shows the Pokémon in a scene, a habitat, a moment.

Illustration Rare vs Special Illustration Rare

Illustration Rares feature regular Pokémon and smaller scenes. Special Illustration Rares are reserved for the marquee cards — usually Pokémon ex — with larger, more elaborate compositions, often connecting across cards in the same set (Twilight Masquerade and Journey Together are full of multi-card scenes). In the rarity table of any modern set breakdown on this site, these two lines are where the art budget went. They are numbered in the secret section, above the set's printed total.

Why They Changed Collecting

Illustration Rares decoupled chasing from playing: a card can be a set's most wanted pull while seeing zero competitive play, purely on art. That is healthier for the hobby than it sounds — playable chase cards (Surging Sparks' Pikachu ex) still exist, but now every set also has display-piece chases for the binder-first collector. When you evaluate a new set as a collector, count its Illustration Rares and read their scenes. The sets people remember in ten years will be the ones those scenes came from.

Displaying Them Well

These cards reward presentation: a binder page of connected scenes reads like a comic, and many collectors build 'art pages' — nine pockets chosen purely for how the images sit together — ahead of set order. Handle them like the art they are: sleeved before they touch a page, out of direct sun, and flipped through by the edges. The era's artists signed their work in composition; the least a collection can do is frame it properly.

Key Takeaways

  • Illustration Rares are full-bleed scene art for regular Pokémon.
  • Special Illustration Rares are the marquee ex versions, often in connected scenes.
  • Art value now rivals play value in the chase — a healthier split for the hobby.
  • They live in the secret section, above the printed total.
