Some decks are a pile of good cards; this one is a machine with two moving parts. Pidgeot ex finds any card every turn with Quick Search, and Charizard ex converts that consistency into escalating damage with Burning Darkness. Build the engine first and the finisher takes care of itself.
The Core Cards
- Charizard ex — Stage 2 Darkness, 330 HP, from Obsidian Flames. Ability: Infernal Reign; Attacks: Burning Darkness.
- Pidgeot ex — Stage 2 Colorless, 280 HP, from Obsidian Flames. Ability: Quick Search; Attacks: Blustery Wind.
- Charmander — Basic Fire, 60 HP, from Obsidian Flames. Attacks: Heat Tackle.
- Pidgey — Basic Colorless, 60 HP, from Obsidian Flames. Attacks: Gust.
The Game Plan
The game plan is patient: evolve Pidgey early, let Quick Search assemble the Charizard line piece by piece, and take your first Prizes with whatever is ready rather than forcing the big swing. Burning Darkness grows as your opponent takes Prizes, so the deck is deliberately comfortable playing from behind — every Prize they take makes your closer stronger. Rare Candy (an Item card printed in the base Scarlet & Violet set) is the classic accelerator for Stage 2 lines like this one, letting a Charmander jump straight to Charizard ex when the moment is right.

The Prize Map
Every deck should know its own scoreboard. Your flagship, Charizard ex, gives up 2 Prizes when it falls, so the route to six usually runs through it exactly twice, with single-Prize support taking the early trades. The core above is drawn from Obsidian Flames, which is also your shopping list in order: flagship first, evolution line second, support last.
Testing Checklist
- Goldfish test: is Charizard ex in play and powered by turn three in at least 8 of 10 solo runs?
- First-Prize test: which Pokémon takes the first Prize while Charizard ex is still developing?
- Recovery test: after Charizard ex is Knocked Out, who takes the next two Prizes — and is that plan in the deck, or in your hopes?
Budget Roles and Alternatives
On a budget, the roles matter more than the exact names. Any Fire Basic that can attack for one or two Energy can hold the early game while the Stage 2 line assembles, and a single-prize Fire attacker from Obsidian Flames can take the first Prize so Charizard ex only has to take the last few. What you cannot replace cheaply is the search engine — consistency is the deck.
Build the engine first, goldfish the first three turns until they are boring, and only then start swapping in tech. Every deck in this series rewards that order of operations.
